As Spring slowly approaches, the team at Aqua Pump warns homeowners with either a type of drinking water system or water softener system to use caution with flood season approaching. Over the past few years, we have experienced some unique weather to the New England region. Often times, many homeowners use either a sump pump or some other technique to rid a home of flood water either in the basement or some other area of the home.

However, many homeowners forget that their particular water system may have been affected by the rising water. It is always a good idea to get systems checked out for safety and reassurance. Here are a few tips should flood water pose a problem on your household.

Use caution when approaching any electricity-using equipment while there is still water on the floor; better to leave it alone until the floor is dry.

  • Electrical outlets submerged or under water should be inspected in case replacement is required.
  • Do you have a private well?If the head of the well was submerged its within your best interested to have the well inspected and tested. In addition,  your water system should be sanitized before water use.
  • Water treatment equipment should be inspected, sanitized separatel and replacement of filters.
  • If water system appears to have been immersed in water, an inspection by a qualified technician before using it again.

Use of caution is an absolute must when electrical outlets and equipment has been affected by water. The best and safest procedure is to wait until water is completely gone and having a professional look and oversee the situation. Here at Aqua Pump, our trained technicians are prepared to take the necessary steps to get your water system back in the condition it needs to be. You can call our team at (860) 684-5349 for any additional information or emergency.

“Recent well testing in various towns around Connecticut has found arsenic and uranium,” said DPH Epidemiologist Brian Toal. “While the distribution of contaminated wells has been sporadic, there have been enough findings statewide to prompt recommended testing for both metals in all Connecticut towns.”

Wells should be tested again every 5 years in addition to the testing at the time of sale of the home and when a new well is drilled.

The metals can be found sporadically throughout ground water, and because they can have adverse health effects, its important to understand everyone statewide. There have been enough findings statewide as of recent to prompt well water to be tested statewide.

As this immediate release from the CT DPH states, "Arsenic is classified as a human cancer-causing agent, which has been associated with increased risk of lung, bladder and skin cancers. The type of uranium found in groundwater is not considered a radioactive risk and is therefore not a major cancer concern. However, the toxicity of the uranium metal has been associated with adverse effects on kidney function."

Aqua Pump was the first company approved by DPH in connecticut to install arsenic/ uranium filtration systems on Public water supplies etc.

We are fully aware of the current issue and are prepared for an influx of testing necessary for well water homes and locations throughout the state. Please contact our office to schedule your test at (860) 684-5349.

Do you ever recall testing liquids and their pH with litmus paper? If you do, you recall them changing all different colors depending on what the liquid is. While the experiment might have seemed boring at the time, understanding pH levels is extremely important for your health but also know what your body is consuming.

As Wikipedia defines it, In chemistry, pH (/p / or /p h/) is a measure of the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic or alkaline. Pure water has a pH very close to 7.

So now that we know what pH levels mean, here are a couple of items and where they land on the pH scale:

Milk: 6.2

Coffee: 5.5

Orange Juice: 3.5

Soapy Water: 10

Apple Juice: 3

So what does pH mean when it comes to water? The pH level of water determines whether it is hard or sof. As we have talked about before, Hard water has a high mineral content. While it is not generally harmful for ones health, hard water can cause breakdowns with equipment that handles the water. Soft water on the other hand, contains few or no extra elements. Water tested with a pH level less than 6.5 is considered acidic. Water tested with a pH higher than 8.5 is considered basic and is often hard.

The importance of understanding pH water levels is to determine that your water is not damaging the internal parts of your home such as pipies, appliances and anything that works and has water flowing through it.

This is why it is always good to get your water tested! Don't find out the hard way when your appliances and pipes have suffered from damaging pH levels in your water.

Testing is simple. Call Aqua Pump today at (860) 684-5349 for more information and to schedule testing.

Our constant message to drink more water might sound repetitive, but the news has been reporting more and more about the dangers of diet soda and more specifically, Aspartame.

As Livestrong.com reports, "While aspartame products, such as NutraSweet and Equal may appear to be a healthier alternative to sugar, there are a lot of side effects and the potential for poisoning. The symptoms of aspartame poisoning can impact your psychological and physiological functioning and may even lead to death"

While we are not medical experts, there have been many correlating symptoms tied into the digestion of aspartame and the human body. As Livestrong states, symptoms such as "numbness in the limbs, severe tremors, facial pain, seizures, headaches or migraines, confusion, fatigue, slurred speech and hyperactivity.

Aqua Pump takes great pride in educating the youth regarding the benefits of drinking water over soda and diet soda. This year, we have teamed up with school systems and Dentists to promote water over other soft drinks.

Lets face it: Soda tastes great! However, the side affects of drinking these beverages over long periods of time can affect much more than we might realize.

When it comes to having well water or municipal water, there are pro's and con's attached to both. With municipal water, you can be assured your water is tested on a regular basis. With well water however, it is up to the owner to make sure that theyve schedule routine water testing. Even with routine testing however, problems can still arise.

So what does someone do when their municipal water has a bad taste or smell?

Thanks to several heat waves Connecticut and New England have faced thus far, conserving water is more important than ever. While there havent been many complaints of shortages, it certainly doesnt mean that it won't become an issue. Thats why our team at Aqua Pump have come up with suggestions on how to save every drop of water we can, in the case of a drought or shortage in the near future.

Water around the house:

  • Water plants and lawn early in the morning or at night to reduce evaporation;
  • If its necessary to water your yard or flowers, make sure the water is directed at the plants and/or grass of choice.
  • Check your plants prior to watering.  If the soil is moist enough, the plants may not need the water at that moment.

Indoor use:

  • Run dishwasher only when there is a full load
  • Make sure faucets and toilets are leak free
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.

In addition to these tips, some homeowners may want to consider taking a further step by having Aqua Pump install a water softener system to combat hard water and the trouble caused by it. Evolve Series® EVRC water conditioners are a great and efficient way to combat hard water while spending less water on soap scum and stains often associated with hard water.

Hard Water? Sounds simple, right?

No so fast. In fact, anything that comes in constant contact with your hard water, can suffer greatly.

Here are some signs of hard water:

Dishwasher

With hard water, you will notice spotting on the items in the dishwasher due to the minerals within the water.

Clothing

Those with hard water will notice several side effects in regards to clothing. Clothes that have been washed in hard water can feel scratchy along with dingy. If clothes are already soiled before entering the washing machine, more minerals will be included into the water adding to the issues. With continuous use, your clothes' life span can diminish up to 40 percent.

Bathing

As stated from the hard water website, "Bathing with soap in hard water leaves a film of sticky soap curd on the skin. The film may prevent removal of soil and bacteria. Soap curd interferes with the return of skin to its normal, slightly acid condition, and may lead to irritation. Soap curd on hair may make it dull, lifeless and difficult to manage."

Probably the most costly effect of hard water is the damage to pipes and appliances. Also stated in the hard water website, "Hard water also contributes to inefficient and costly operation of water-using appliances. Heated hard water forms a scale of calcium and magnesium minerals (limescale deposits) that can contribute to the inefficient operation or failure of water-using appliances. Pipes can become clogged with scale that reduces water flow and ultimately requires pipe replacement. Limescale has been known to increase energy bills by up to 25%

While hard water is a serious issue, the team at Aqua Pump is prepared to help solve your issue in the most efficient manner. Evolve Series® EVRC water conditioners are ideal for reducing levels of hardness while also handling common odor and taste problems associated with municipal water.

Whether its your house or someone else, at one point or another We've seen the stains caused by low pH or iron in water. The unfortunate part is how expensive it can be to replace fixtures or even plumbing within the household.

We don't always think of the long-term effects our contaminated water can have on our appliances over time, however it can be extremely expensive and problematic.

So what can you do to prevent further damage from happening? Luckily, a simple, efficient fix that is afforable and will correct your problem!

EVBF unit I

  • Built from the ground up using special media and media mixes to treat one or several water quality problems.
  • Your Evolve dealer can perform basic water testing right in your home to determine the proper media formula for your household.
  • They can then recommend the right EVBF configuration or combination system needed to provide the best water quality possible.

EVBF metered units offer the flexibility to treat many water quality issues, including chlorine removal, iron removal, neutralizing acid (EVBF-AN) and turbidity removal

Golden Eagle Neutralizers

  • Are needed to raise pH. A neutralizer is a closed vessel filled with limestone. The water passes through the neutralizer and dissolves the limestone raising the pH.
  • The blue or green stains are a result of copper plumbing being dissolved by water and re-oxidizing on the fixtures. By raising the pH you will extend the life of the plumbing and prevent the development of leaks.

Often times when we hear people talk of being dehydrated, its because of a weather change or during the warmer seasons. Don't be fooled however; you can be dehydrated at any time regardless of weather!!

Being dehydrated can be a very serious issue and needs to be monitored. Thanks to Fox News, there are several signs that might be leading indicators to dehydration that you wouldnt have thought of before.

1. Color Of Urine:

As Fox News states,

As blood pressure falls and tissue dries out in the dehydrated individual, the kidneys will kick into action and try to conserve water by concentrating the urine or by stopping the production of urine entirely. As the urine becomes more and more concentrated, its color will become darker and darker until it reaches shades of dark yellow or even amber.

2. Dry Eyes

"It may sound silly, but if someone is outright bawling and they have nothing but dry eyes to show for it, then there’s a good chance that they're dehydrated. Tears are actually used to clean and lubricate the eyes. Although tears for crying differ in composition from tears used for real lubrication, all tears contain water. So, if we’re low on H2O, we may stop producing tears." States Fox News.

3. Dry Mouth

This is the most common indicator, but one that should not be taken lightly. When our mouth is dry, our tongue begins to swell which is an indicator that our body is in need of water. In addition to dry mouth is also chapped lips, which can also mean the same thing.

Water is incredibly important to our body and our organs. When we are dehydrated, our organs are forced to work harder, which can have lasting effects on our body and well being. In addition to drinking water, safe and filtered water is essential to the well being of our bodies.  Many times, people dont go for a glass of water, simply because of taste or odor when simple fixes can change our habits to healthier lifestyles.
